This 4.5-pound parcel includes 8 hand-dug pieces of fire opal root—ancient tree roots that have been naturally opalized over millions of years. These rare specimens exhibit vibrant yellow, orange, and red body color, with preserved fibrous textures that clearly reflect their origin as root systems.
Formed by the slow replacement of buried roots with silica-rich groundwater, these pieces contain translucent fire opal that glows when backlit. While the outer surfaces may appear earthy, slabbing and trimming often reveals internal zones of rich color and clarity.
Each piece is in raw, untreated form and photographed wet to highlight its potential. Whether you’re a lapidary artist, knife maker, collector, or metaphysical stoneworker, this parcel offers a stunning blend of organic structure and gemstone glow.

What Is Fire Opal Root?
Fire opal root forms when ancient tree roots are gradually replaced by silica over geologic time. In rare conditions, this process creates fire opal—opal with rich red, orange, or yellow body color that glows when backlit.
These pieces retain the fibrous structure of the original root while transforming into translucent gemstone. Many of the best zones are hidden inside and can be revealed through slabbing or trimming, making this material ideal for lapidary and artistic work.
